PNG to ICO in 3 steps

  1. Choose a square PNG of your logo, ideally 256 × 256 px or larger.
  2. Click "Convert to ICO". Seven icon sizes are drawn and packed into one file.
  3. Download the .ico, rename it to favicon.ico and upload it to your site.

How the icon is made

  • Every size in one file

Browser tabs use 16 px, the taskbar 32 or 48 px, and desktop shortcuts go up to 256 px. The .ico holds all seven sizes.

  • Round logos stay round

Transparent corners in your PNG stay transparent in the icon, so a circular badge won’t show a white square in the tab.

  • Odd shapes aren’t stretched

A wide or tall image is centred on a transparent square, so its proportions stay right.

  • Your new logo stays private

The icon is made inside your browser, so a logo you haven’t launched yet isn’t sent to any server.

Favicon and ICO questions

Which sizes are inside the .ico?

16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px. Browsers and Windows pick the one that fits: 16 px for a tab, 32 px for a bookmark or the taskbar, 256 px for large desktop icons.

How do I add the favicon to my website?

Rename the file to favicon.ico and upload it to the root of your site, so it opens at yoursite.com/favicon.ico. Browsers look there on their own. Also add <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="any"> inside the <head> of your pages. On WordPress you can set it under Appearance › Customize › Site Identity.

How do I use the .ico on a Windows shortcut or folder?

Right-click the shortcut, choose Properties › Change Icon › Browse and pick your .ico. For a folder, go to Properties › Customize › Change Icon. Keep the .ico in a place where it will stay, because Windows reads it from that location.

What PNG gives the best result?

A square image of at least 256 × 256 px with a transparent background and a simple, bold shape. Small text and thin lines disappear at 16 px, so a single letter or symbol usually works better than a full wordmark.

My image isn’t square. What happens?

It’s scaled to fit and centred on a transparent square, which leaves empty space above and below (or on the sides). For a fuller icon, crop it to 1:1 with Crop Image first.

Why did my favicon not change after uploading?

Browsers hold on to old favicons for a long time. Hard-refresh the page (Ctrl + F5), open it in a private window, or add a version to the link, like /favicon.ico?v=2.
