ICO to PNG in 3 steps

  1. Select the .ico, for example a favicon.ico or an icon from a program folder.
  2. Click "Convert to PNG". The largest size stored inside is taken out.
  3. Download the PNG. Several icons come together in a ZIP.

What happens to the icon

  • You get the biggest version

An .ico can hold a dozen sizes. The largest one is picked for you, so you don’t end up with a 16 px thumbnail.

  • Edges stay transparent

Rounded corners and soft shadows keep their see-through parts, so the PNG sits well on any background.

  • Works where .ico doesn’t

Word, Google Slides, Canva and most photo editors won’t take .ico, but they all accept PNG.

  • Unpacked in this tab

You don’t need special software. The icon file is opened inside this browser tab on your device and isn’t sent anywhere.

ICO to PNG questions

What is inside an .ico file?

An .ico is a small container that holds the same icon in several sizes, usually 16, 32, 48 and 256 px. Windows and browsers pick the size that fits. A PNG holds just one image, so the largest one is exported.

How do I get a website’s favicon to convert?

Most sites keep it at their root address. Open example.com/favicon.ico in your browser and save it. If it isn’t there, the page source usually lists the icon in a link rel="icon" line.

The PNG is only 32 × 32 px. Why so small?

That was the largest size inside the .ico, so there was nothing bigger to take out. If you enlarge it, it will look blocky. For a sharp logo, look for the original artwork or an SVG version.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes. Transparent and semi-transparent pixels in the icon stay that way in the PNG. If you want a white background instead, put the PNG through PNG to JPG.

Can I get the other sizes too?

This page only exports the largest image. You can make any smaller size from it with Resize Image.

Can I convert icons taken from .exe or .dll files?

Only after they’ve been saved as separate .ico files. Programs keep their icons inside their own code, so pull them out with an icon extractor first, then convert the .ico here.
