JPG to ICO in 3 steps

  1. Pick the JPG you want as an icon, like a logo, a pet photo or a face.
  2. Click "Convert to ICO". The picture is fitted into a square and scaled to seven sizes.
  3. Download the .ico and set it on a folder, a shortcut or your website.

Making an icon from a JPG

  • Use the file you already have

Logos often turn up as a JPG in an email or a WhatsApp chat. You don’t have to track down the designer’s original first.

  • Family photos stay on your PC

When you turn a photo of your kids or your dog into a folder icon, it’s done in your browser. The photo isn’t uploaded.

  • No editor needed

Paint, Photos and most phone galleries can’t save .ico files. Here it takes one button and there’s nothing to install.

  • Rectangles aren’t stretched

A landscape or portrait photo is centred in the square icon with transparent space around it, so faces don’t get squashed.

JPG to ICO questions

Will my icon have a transparent background?

The picture itself won’t. JPG has no transparency, so the photo’s or logo’s background (often white) stays in the icon and shows as a filled square in browser tabs and on the desktop. For a cut-out icon, start from a transparent PNG and use PNG to ICO.

My JPG is a rectangle. How is it made square?

Icons are square, so a landscape or portrait photo is scaled to fit and centred, and transparent strips fill the space that’s left. If you’d rather fill the whole square, crop the photo to 1:1 first with Crop Image.

Which photos make good icons?

Close-up, simple shots work best: a face, a pet, or one object on a plain background. At 16 or 32 px a busy landscape just looks like a smudge. Crop tightly around the subject before you convert.

How do I put the icon on a Windows folder?

Right-click the folder › Properties › Customize › Change Icon › Browse, then choose your .ico. For a desktop shortcut, go to Properties › Change Icon instead. Keep the .ico in a folder you won’t delete.

Can I use it as my website’s favicon?

Yes. Name it favicon.ico and upload it to your site’s main folder, and it will show up in browser tabs. Keep in mind that the square background from the JPG will be visible in dark browser themes.

Will JPG blur or blockiness carry into the icon?

Shrinking to icon size hides most JPG artefacts. If the original is small or heavily compressed, the 128 and 256 px sizes can look soft, so start from the largest, cleanest copy you have.
