JPG to PNG in 3 steps

  1. Choose the JPG or JPEG photos you want to convert.
  2. There are no settings to fiddle with. Just press "Convert to PNG".
  3. Download the PNG. If you picked several photos, they come zipped together.

When a PNG copy helps

  • Edits stop piling up damage

Each time a JPG is edited and saved again, it loses a little more. A PNG copy can be saved as often as you like without getting worse.

  • For "PNG only" uploads

Some websites, design templates and app stores only take PNG files. This gets your JPG into the right format in a few seconds.

  • Expect a bigger file

The PNG will be larger than the JPG you started with. That’s simply what lossless storage costs.

  • The photo stays on your device

Your browser turns the JPG into a PNG by itself, so the photo isn’t sent over the internet.

JPG to PNG questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. The PNG is an exact copy of how the JPG looks right now, including any blocky patches it already has. What it does is stop things getting worse, because further edits and saves won’t add new JPG artifacts.

Will the background become transparent?

No. A JPG has no transparency information, so the PNG gets a solid background too. For a see-through background, remove it in an editor first. Saving as PNG will then keep that transparency.

Why is the PNG several times bigger?

JPG throws away detail to stay small, while PNG stores every pixel exactly. It’s the same picture with much more data. For sharing finished photos, JPG is usually the better choice.

When is PNG the right choice?

When you’ll keep editing the image, when it has text or sharp lines you want to stay crisp from now on, or when a site or app only accepts PNG.

Is JPEG the same as JPG?

Yes. .jpg and .jpeg are two spellings of the same format, and you can use either here.

Can I do this on my phone?

Yes. Open the page in Safari or Chrome on your phone, choose the photos and save the PNGs. You don’t install anything, and the photos aren’t uploaded.
