PNG to WebP in 3 steps

  1. Add the PNG graphics you plan to put on your site.
  2. Press "Convert to WebP". Transparent areas stay as they are.
  3. Download the WebP files (a ZIP if there are several) and upload them in place of the PNGs.

Why swap PNG for WebP

  • Transparency is kept

Transparent logos and product cut-outs keep their see-through edges. A JPG can’t do that.

  • Lighter pages, better scores

Smaller images help your Largest Contentful Paint and clear image warnings in PageSpeed Insights.

  • Your site builder takes it

WordPress (5.8 and later), Shopify, Wix and most modern site builders accept WebP uploads.

  • Client work stays confidential

Unreleased designs and client logos are converted on your computer and don’t pass through our servers.

PNG to WebP questions

How much smaller will my images get?

That depends on the image. Photos and gradients saved as PNG often shrink a lot. Simple flat logos that PNG already compresses well may only shrink a little. Compare the two sizes before you replace anything.

Is the WebP lossless?

No. It’s saved at about 92% quality, which looks very close to the PNG but isn’t identical bit for bit. That trade-off is what makes the file smaller. Keep your original PNGs as master copies.

Will the transparent background stay?

Yes. WebP supports transparency, so logos and cut-outs keep their see-through areas exactly where they were.

Why did I get a PNG instead of a WebP?

You’re probably using Safari. It shows WebP fine but can’t create WebP files, so the tool gives you a PNG rather than nothing. Open this page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox to get WebP files.

Do all browsers show WebP?

Every current browser does, Safari included since 2020. For a public website, WebP is a safe choice today.

Can I convert on my phone?

Yes, Chrome on Android creates WebP. On iPhone and iPad every browser runs on Safari’s engine, so you’ll get PNG there. For WebP, a computer is the better option.
