What WebP does for your site

  • Clears a PageSpeed warning

"Serve images in next-gen formats" is one of the most common audit warnings. Switching your photos to WebP deals with it.

  • Easier on mobile visitors

Smaller photos use less data and load faster on 4G, which matters when people shop from their phones.

  • A gallery at a time

Convert the photos from a product shoot or a travel post together, up to 50 files per batch.

  • Drafts stay private

Photos for posts that aren’t live yet are converted on your own device, not on somebody else’s server.

JPG to WebP questions

How much smaller is WebP than JPG?

In Google’s own tests, WebP came out around 25–34% smaller than JPG at similar quality. Your results depend on the photo and on how strongly the JPG was compressed already.

Does converting a JPG lose quality?

A little. The JPG was already compressed, and saving it as WebP at about 92% quality compresses it a second time. It’s hard to see, but keep your original JPGs in case you want to edit or export them again later.

My photos are 4000 px wide. Is converting enough?

Probably not. A photo straight from a camera is heavy in any format. First resize it to the width your site really shows (often 1200–2000 px), then convert it to WebP. That’s where the biggest saving comes from.

Does WordPress accept WebP?

Yes, since WordPress 5.8. Upload the WebP to the Media Library the same way you would a JPG. Most themes and page builders show it without extra plugins.

Why did Safari give me a PNG?

Safari can display WebP but can’t create it, so the tool gives you a PNG instead. To get WebP photos, use Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer or an Android phone.

Will visitors with old browsers see my WebP photos?

Almost everyone will, since all current browsers support WebP. Only very old ones like Internet Explorer can’t show it.
