Why PNG for AVIF files

  • Editors can open it

Many photo editors, Office apps and older design tools still can’t read AVIF. PNG works in all of them.

  • Transparency is kept

Logos and product cut-outs in AVIF often have a transparent background. It stays transparent in the PNG.

  • Nothing else is lost

PNG is lossless, so the image you edit looks exactly like the AVIF did. No extra compression is added.

  • Converted on your device

You don’t need the Microsoft Store extension. Your browser already reads AVIF and makes the PNG right on your computer or phone, without sending the image to us.

AVIF to PNG questions

What is an AVIF file?

AVIF is a newer image format based on the AV1 video codec. Websites and image CDNs like it because it’s often half the size of a JPG at similar quality. So when you save a picture from one of those sites, you end up with an .avif.

Why won’t Windows open my AVIF?

To show AVIF in Photos and File Explorer, Windows needs the free "AV1 Video Extension" from the Microsoft Store. Many programs don’t recognise AVIF at all. Converting to PNG gets around this without installing anything.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes. Both AVIF and PNG support transparency, so see-through backgrounds come through the conversion. That’s the main reason to pick PNG here instead of JPG.

Why is the PNG several times larger?

AVIF compresses images very hard, while PNG keeps every pixel without loss. So the PNG will be much heavier. If you only need a small photo to share, AVIF to JPG suits you better.

Which browsers can convert AVIF?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (iOS 16 and later) can all read AVIF, so the conversion works on most phones and computers. Very old browsers may show an error.

What about animated AVIF?

A PNG is a still image, so only the first frame of an animated AVIF is kept.
