What this tool does

  • No extension to install

You don’t need the AV1 extension on Windows or a newer photo editor. Your browser can already read AVIF.

  • A whole gallery at once

If a set of pictures you saved from a website all came as AVIF, convert them together and get one ZIP back.

  • Done on your device

Your browser opens the AVIF and saves the JPG locally. We never see the image or its file name.

  • Free to use

Use it as often as you like. There’s no account to create and no queue to wait in.

AVIF questions

What is an AVIF file?

AVIF is a newer image format based on the AV1 video codec. It makes photos even smaller than WebP does, so more and more websites use it. When you save a picture from one of those sites, Chrome keeps it as .avif.

Why won’t Windows open my AVIF?

Windows Photos needs the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store to show AVIF. Many older programs, Office versions and photo printers can’t read it at all. A JPG works with all of them.

The tool says it can’t read my AVIF. What now?

This page relies on your browser’s built-in AVIF support. Current Chrome, Edge and Firefox have it, and Safari has it from version 16 (iOS 16 / macOS Ventura). If your browser is older, update it or open the page in Chrome.

Will the colours look the same?

For normal photos, yes. Some AVIFs contain HDR or extra-wide colour, which JPG can’t store. Those can look a bit flatter or less bright after conversion.

Is transparency kept?

Not in JPG. Any transparent areas in the AVIF are filled with white. If you need to keep them, choose PNG or WebP in the Image Converter.

Can I convert AVIF on my phone?

Yes, in any recent phone browser. Open the page, pick the files from Downloads and save the JPGs to your gallery.
