Why does Chrome or Google Images save pictures as .webp?

Many websites, including Google’s own services, send images as WebP because it’s lighter than JPG or PNG and pages load faster. When you right-click and choose "Save image as", you get the file in whatever format the site sent, which is WebP.

Why can’t my computer open the .webp file?

WebP is newer than JPG and PNG. Older Windows photo viewers, Paint, Photoshop releases from before 2022 and some Office versions don’t understand it. PNG works in nearly every program made in the last 25 years.

Will the PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. PNG supports transparency just like WebP, so see-through areas stay see-through. That’s the main reason to choose PNG over JPG here.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the WebP?

WebP images on websites are usually compressed with some loss, while PNG stores every pixel without loss. Same picture, more data. If size matters more to you than transparency, WebP to JPG gives a much smaller file.

What about animated WebP?

A PNG from this tool is a still image, so only the first frame of an animated WebP is kept.

Does it work on a phone?
