Number PDF pages in 3 steps

  1. Choose your PDF or drop it onto the box above.
  2. Pick a position, a format and the number to start from.
  3. Press "Add Numbers" and download the numbered copy.

What you can set

  • Six positions

Top or bottom, on the left, in the center or on the right. Bottom center is selected to begin with, which suits most theses, reports and handouts.

  • Any starting number

If this file continues an earlier chapter, set the first number to 25 and the count carries on from there.

  • Works on landscape pages

Rotated and wide pages get their numbers in the spot you picked, the right way up.

  • The file stays with you

Your browser writes the numbers onto the pages, on your phone or computer, so the document isn’t sent anywhere. Use it as often as you like, no account needed.

Questions about page numbers

Where can I put the page numbers?

You can choose top left, top center, top right, bottom left, bottom center or bottom right. Bottom center is selected when you open the tool, because that’s where most documents have their page numbers.

Can I show "page 1 of 12"?

Yes. With the 1 / 12 format each page shows its own number next to the total, for example 3 / 12. If you’d rather keep it simple, use 1, 2, 3.

Can numbering start from a number other than 1?

Yes, type whatever number you need. This is handy when the file is one part of a longer work and has to pick up where the previous part ended.

Can I leave the cover page without a number?

Not yet. Every page in the file gets a number. You can work around it: split off the cover with Split PDF, number the rest starting from 2, then put the two back together with Merge PDF.

Does it work on landscape or rotated pages?

Yes. The number follows the way each page appears on screen, so on rotated or wide pages it still sits upright in the position you chose.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Your browser adds the numbers on your own device, and the PDF doesn’t reach our servers. Password-protected PDFs aren’t supported yet.
