How to compress a PDF file in 3 steps

  1. Choose the PDF you want to make smaller.
  2. Leave it on "Recommended". If a form or email has a size limit, pick "Strong" and a target between 10 MB and 500 KB.
  3. Press "Compress PDF", compare the size before and after, and download.

Good to know

  • Your document stays with you

Most PDF compressors send your file to their own server first. Here your browser does the work, so a contract or a copy of your ID doesn’t go anywhere else.

  • Text stays sharp

Recommended mode only shrinks the photos and scans inside the PDF. Text and drawings are left as they are, so they stay crisp and you can still select them.

  • Made for upload limits

Application portals and email often want a PDF under 10 MB, 5 MB, 2 MB, 1 MB or 500 KB. Strong mode compresses with that target in mind.

  • The file won’t get bigger

If the PDF can’t be made any smaller, you get your original file back. You can compress as many files as you like for free, without signing up.

Questions about compressing PDFs

How do I compress a PDF file?

Drop your PDF on this page, leave the mode on "Recommended" and press "Compress PDF". You’ll see the size before and after and how much you saved, and then you can download the smaller file. There’s nothing to install and you don’t need an account.

How can I get a PDF under 1 MB?

Choose "Strong" mode and set the target to 1 MB (500 KB, 2 MB, 5 MB and 10 MB are also there). Each page is turned into a compressed image and squeezed until the file fits. If you want to keep selectable text, try "Recommended" first and switch to "Strong" only if the file is still too big.

Will compressing a PDF lower the quality?

In "Recommended" mode text and vector drawings aren’t touched. Only the photos and scans inside get lighter, and on screen that’s hard to notice. "Strong" mode turns pages into images, so very small text can look a little soft when you zoom in a lot.

Why can’t I select the text after compressing?

That happens in "Strong" mode. Every page becomes an image, which gives the smallest file, but the text can no longer be selected, copied or searched. If you need those, use "Recommended" mode.

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It depends on what’s inside. Scanned or photo-heavy PDFs often shrink by 40–80 %. A PDF that’s mostly text is usually small already, so it shrinks only a little. If no saving is possible, you get your original file back rather than a bigger one.

Is my file safe? Is it uploaded?

It isn’t uploaded. Your phone or computer does the compressing inside the browser, and nothing is kept once you close the page. Password-protected PDFs aren’t supported, so remove the password first.
