Questions about JFIF to PNG
What is a .jfif file?
It’s a JPEG image with an unusual extension. JFIF is the standard way JPEG photos are stored, and on some Windows PCs Chrome and Edge save downloaded JPEGs as .jfif instead of .jpg.
Should I convert to PNG or JPG?
Go with PNG if you plan to edit the picture or a form asks for PNG. If you just want a normal photo file to share, JFIF to JPG keeps the file small.
Will the PNG look better than the .jfif?
No. The PNG shows exactly what the .jfif shows, including any blur or blockiness that’s already there. What PNG does is stop the quality from dropping any further.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
JPEG drops some detail to stay small, while PNG keeps every pixel as it is. A photo can easily end up 3 to 5 times larger as a PNG. That’s the cost of a lossless copy.
Will the background become transparent?
No. A .jfif has no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background. Converting changes the file format, not what’s in the picture.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your browser opens each file and saves it as PNG on your own device. Nothing goes to our servers, and nothing is kept after you close the page.
