JFIF to JPG in 3 steps

  1. Pick the .jfif files, usually from your Downloads folder.
  2. Press "Convert to JPG". Each file is saved again as a real .jpg.
  3. Save the .jpg files. Several files download together as a ZIP.

When this helps

  • Upload forms accept it

Many sites only allow .jpg, .jpeg or .png and turn away .jfif. A real .jpg file goes through.

  • No renaming one by one

Fixing one file by hand is easy, fixing forty is tedious. Drop them all in and get the .jpg files back in one ZIP.

  • When you can’t rename

On phones and locked-down work PCs you often can’t change file extensions. This page gets around that.

  • Your downloads stay on your PC

The .jfif files are re-saved by your browser, so the pictures you downloaded aren’t sent to a server.

JFIF questions

What is a JFIF file?

JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is the most common way JPEG images are stored. So a .jfif file is simply a JPEG photo. Only the extension is unusual, and that’s what confuses upload forms and some apps.

Why do my downloads save as .jfif?

On some Windows PCs, a registry setting links the JPEG image type to the .jfif extension. Chrome and Edge read that setting when they save pictures, so JPEGs from the web end up as .jfif instead of .jpg.

Can I just rename .jfif to .jpg?

Usually yes, and that’s the most faithful fix because the data isn’t touched. In File Explorer, turn on "File name extensions" under View, then rename the file. This tool is useful when you have lots of files, can’t see or change extensions, or are on a phone.

Does this tool change the image?

It decodes the picture and saves a new JPG at about 92% quality. The result looks the same, but it isn’t a byte-for-byte copy the way a renamed file would be.

How do I stop Windows saving .jfif?

If you’re comfortable with it, open the Registry Editor, go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg and set the "Extension" value to .jpg. Back up the registry first. If you’re unsure, just keep converting or renaming instead.

Is .jpeg any different from .jpg?

No. .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif all hold the same kind of image. The .jpg spelling is simply the one every website accepts.
