Good to know
-
You choose the start and end
Mark where the GIF begins and stops, so it holds just the reaction, the goal or the joke you wanted.
-
Nothing to upload
Video files are large. Instead of sending hundreds of megabytes to a server, the frames are read from the file on your device.
-
Smoothness vs. file size
Choose 5, 10 or 15 frames per second and a width of 320, 480 or 640 px. More frames and more pixels look smoother but make a bigger file.
-
Your videos stay with you
Family clips and screen recordings are converted in your browser and don’t go to any server. You don’t need an account, and no watermark is added.
Video to GIF questions
How do I convert an MP4 to a GIF?
Add the MP4, set the start and end of the part you want, choose a frame rate and width, and press "Convert to GIF". WebM and MOV files work the same way, as long as your browser can play them.
Why is a GIF limited to 20 seconds?
A GIF saves every frame as a full picture and can’t compress the way a video does. Twenty seconds at 10 frames per second is already 200 pictures, and longer clips get too heavy to share. If you choose a longer range, the GIF stops at 20 seconds.
How do I keep the GIF small?
Shorten the clip first, then lower the frame rate to 5 or 10 fps and the width to 320 or 480 px. Each of these makes the file a lot smaller. Fast action looks smoothest at 15 fps, but that gives the biggest file.
My iPhone .mov video won’t load. Why?
iPhones often record in HEVC (H.265), and some browsers on Windows and Android can’t play it. Try this page in Safari, or set the iPhone camera to "Most Compatible" so new videos are saved as H.264, which plays almost anywhere.
What happens to HD or 4K videos?
They work, but each frame is scaled down to the width you pick, 640 px at most. A wider GIF would get very large without looking much better on most screens.
Will the GIF have sound?
No. The GIF format can’t store audio, so the result is silent. That’s also part of why GIFs can start playing on their own in chats and on web pages.
