GIF to PNG in 3 steps

  1. Pick your GIFs. They can be old web graphics, clip art or an animation you want a still from.
  2. Press "Convert to PNG". The first frame of each GIF is saved.
  3. Download the PNG, or a single ZIP if you converted several.

Why use PNG

  • More than 256 colours

In a PNG you can paint, add gradients and soft shadows, and the colours won’t get forced back into a small palette.

  • Transparency carries over

Old website buttons, smileys and clip art with see-through backgrounds keep them in the PNG.

  • A still image from an animation

If you need a thumbnail or preview for a GIF, the first frame comes out as a static PNG.

  • GIFs stay on your computer

Your browser opens and converts the GIFs. They aren’t sent to a server or kept anywhere.

GIF to PNG questions

What happens to an animated GIF?

Only the first frame is saved, because a PNG holds one still image. This page can’t pick a later frame, so if you need one from the middle of the animation, take a screenshot at that moment.

Will the PNG look better than the GIF?

It will look the same. PNG is lossless and copies the GIF’s pixels exactly, but it can’t bring back colours the GIF already dropped. What you gain is a file that’s easier to edit.

Is the transparent background kept?

Yes. Transparent pixels in the GIF are still transparent in the PNG, so stickers and clip art keep their shape on any background.

Why convert GIF to PNG at all?

Many design tools, presentation apps and print services handle PNG better than GIF, and some profile picture or document upload forms won’t accept GIF. PNG is also a better format to keep editing in.

Will the file get bigger?

For simple graphics the size usually stays about the same. A single PNG frame can be much smaller than a long animated GIF, because all the other frames are left out.

Can I get a JPG instead?

Yes, use GIF to JPG. It fills transparent areas with white and gives a smaller file for GIFs that look like photos.
