HEIC to JPG in 3 steps
- Pick the .heic or .heif photos, whether they’re on your iPhone, your PC or in a cloud folder.
- Press "Convert to JPG". The very first time, the decoder has to load once.
- Download the JPGs. If you converted a whole album, it comes as one ZIP.
Good to know
-
No paid Windows extension
You don’t have to go looking for HEIF and HEVC add-ons in the Microsoft Store. Once the photos are JPGs, any program can open them.
-
Family photos stay at home
Your pictures are decoded inside your browser. They aren’t uploaded or stored anywhere, and nobody else sees them.
-
A whole trip at once
If you copied a holiday’s worth of HEIC files to your PC, add up to 50 at a time and convert them together. No signup needed.
-
Works on the iPhone too
Open this page in Safari on the phone, pick photos from your library and save JPG copies there.
HEIC questions
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container, also called HEIF) is the format iPhones have used for photos since iOS 11. It stores a photo in roughly half the space of a JPG at similar quality. The catch is that many devices and websites still can’t open it.
Why can’t Windows open my HEIC photos?
To show HEIC, Windows needs extra codecs from the Microsoft Store: HEIF Image Extensions plus HEVC Video Extensions, which can cost a small fee. Many websites, Android phones and older programs don’t support HEIC at all. JPG works everywhere.
Why do I wait a few seconds on the first conversion?
Browsers can’t read HEIC by themselves, so the first time you convert, the page downloads a HEIC decoder of about 3 MB. Your browser keeps it in its cache, so later conversions start right away. Your photos are still processed only on your device.
How do I stop my iPhone saving photos as HEIC?
Go to Settings › Camera › Formats and choose "Most Compatible". New photos will then be saved as JPG. Photos you already took stay HEIC, so convert those here.
Can my iPhone convert automatically when I copy to a PC?
Yes. Under Settings › Photos › "Transfer to Mac or PC", choose Automatic and photos are turned into JPG when you copy them over a cable. That doesn’t help with files that are already sitting on your computer or in cloud storage as HEIC.
What happens to Live Photos?
You get the still photo as a JPG. The short video part of a Live Photo is a separate file, so it isn’t included.
